What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is a non-surgical aesthetic treatment in which protein derived from botulism toxin is injected underneath skin in order to paralyze or relax facial muscles and thereby minimize or smooth out lines and wrinkles on the face. An improvement in wrinkles can be seen within days and may last up to 4 months, although results may vary. The effect of Botox is temporary. So if the patient doesn't have maintenance Botox treatment, her face will return to its normal appearance within about three to six months.

Who Can or Cannot Have BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat frown lines in people from 18 to 65 years of age. BOTOX® Cosmetic should not be used if there is infection at the injection site(s) and in people with known allergy to any ingredient in the formulation. Patients with neuromuscular disorders such as ALS, myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome may be at increased risk of serious side effects. People who are on antibiotics are at risk for an adverse reaction and therefore are advised to wait until they finish their antibiotics. Pregnant and nursing women are also advised to postpone BOTOX treatment.

What Are The Side Effects?

The most common side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic injection include temporary eyelid droop. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, swelling, redness, and bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection.

What is RESTYLANE?

Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds. Restylane is also used in lips to provide fuller lips. It is a natural substance that already exists in the human body is free of animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins.

What Precautions Should be Taken Before Restylane Treatment?

You should avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication,
St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. We would prescribe you a course of antiviral medication to prevent cold sore outbreak. You should not use Restylane if you are under 18 or pregnant or breastfeeding. Restylane should not be used in people with known susceptibility to keloid formation or hypertrophic scarring. After Restylane treatment, you should minimize sun or UV lamp exposure and extreme cold weather until the swelling and redness resolve.  If laser treatment, chemical peeling or microdermabrasion is done after Restylane treatment, there is a possible risk of eliciting an inflammatory reaction at the implant site. This also applies if Restylane is administered before the skin has healed completely after such a procedure.

How long does Restylane last?

Restylane effects generally last for about six months.

What are the Side Effects of Restylane Injection?

Side effects include redness, swelling, and injection site pain that may last for up to one week. After Restylane injection, lip hardness, swelling and discomfort can be significant and asymmetry may be noted during the first one to two weeks. Also, small lumps of Restylane may be palpated at the site of injection. Restylane bumpy lips are not usually visible, but can remain for several weeks or months after injection before gradually blending into the dermis.

How is Restylane Injected Into Lips or Wrinkles?

Restylane is injected into the dermis below the wrinkle and smoothen the wrinkle out to the desired correction. For lip anhancements, Restylane is injected directly into and/or along the lip line for. Local anesthetic is used to anesthetize the injection sites.
