Sclerotherapy: Lakewood Colorado Vein Center Offers Solutions for Your Varicose Veins and Spider Veins Without Risky Surgery!

What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to treat varicose veins and spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves a simple injection of a solution (generally sodium chloride) directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to collapse and fade from view. The procedure may also treat the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including aching, burning, swelling and night cramps

How is Sclerotherapy Performed?
Usually solution of sodium chloride (salt water) sterile solution and lidocaine (a local anesthetic) is injected into the blood vessel using a very fine needle. A solution without lidocaine is available for people who are allergic to lidocaine. The number of varicose veins injected in one session depends on the size and location of the veins, and the patient’s overall medical condition. Approximately one injection is administered for every inch of spider vein - anywhere from five to 40 injections per treatment session.

Mild discomfort may occur, and a cramping sensation may be felt for 1 to 2 minutes when larger varicose veins are injected. The procedure itself takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The procedure treats only those veins that are currently visible; it does not prevent new veins from surfacing in the future.

What is the Success Rate of Sclerotherapy in treating Varicose and Spider Veins?
Sclerotherapy is effective in as many as 70 percent to 80 percent of injected veins. In a few (less than 10 percent) of the people, sclerotherapy is not successful. In these instances, different solutions or a different method, such as laser therapy or surgery may be tried.

In general, spider veins respond to treatment in 3 to 6 weeks, and larger veins respond in 3 to 4 months. If the veins respond to the treatment, they will not reappear. However, new veins may appear over time. If needed, you may return for injections. Also the larger veins must be treated first, or sclerotherapy of the smaller surface veins will not be successful.

What are the Side Effects of sclerotherapy?
Injected veins can become lumpy and hard for several months especially if the injected veins are large veins. Redness and bruising can occur at injection sites for few days to few weeks. Brown lines or spots on the skin may be noted at the site of the injection and can become permanent in about 5% of the patients. There are other rare complications from Sclerotherapy:  blood clot, skin ulcer, infection, allergic reaction to sclerosing solution.

Am I a Candidate for Sclerotherapy? Women between 30-60 years of age are generally candidates for Sclerotherapy. You are not eligible for sclerotherapy if you are pregnant, within 3 month postpartum, breastfeeding, or are bedridden. If you have had a blood clot in the past, your eligibility will be decided on an individual basis, and will depend on the location and the reason for the clot.
